Old Friends

//part 1// //part 2//

'Hear what?' Nolan asks.
'It sounded like footsteps.' the girl said.
'Are you sure, Aria? asks Nolan.
'Positive.' she says.
'Come on guys.  Lets go check it out.' Finn says with curiosity seeping into his voice.  I hear light footsteps running away, which must be the younger boy's, Finn.
'Finn, wait!' Nolan says.  I hear them start to run after him.  They're calling his name and telling him to stop.

I strain my ears, listening for the slightest movement.  I wait a few minutes before deciding it's safe to move.  I shift my body so I am now facing the bush.  I know this isn't the safest position, leaving my back vulnerable, but I have to peak through the bush.  I quietly part the leaves and look.  Nothing.

All of a sudden I feel somebody behind me.  I spin around and cover my mouth with my hand, so I don't scream.  It's just Holden.  He smirks at me.

' A bit jumpy, aren't we?' he asks.
'Just a little. Where did you go,' I ask, ' you kind of abandoned me here.'
'Nah, you can handle yourself, right?' he asks, avoiding the question.
'Right.' I say.  'So, where did you go? I ask again.
'Just checking the woods.  Don't want anyone slipping by us.' he says simply.  He looks at me seeing if I bought his answer.  I didn't.  I know Holden all to well.
'Do you know something I don't? I ask.
'Course not, Kenzie.  I tell you everything.  Lets go before they come back.' he says.

I let it go, but I still have that feeling in the pit of my stomach.  Something isn't right.  I've known Holden long enough to tell when he's keeping something from me.

<< flashback >>
  *Thunders and Lightnings*

'Mommy! Daddy!' I scream as I run into our kitchen.  My parents were sitting at the table drinking their still steaming tea.
'It's okay, Kenz,' my Father chuckles, 'It's just the giants walking.'
My eyes got as big as saucers. 'Giants are real?' I ask.
'Of course, sweetie. ' my Father says as he winks.
All of a sudden lightning flashes across the sky.  I jump and let out a small cry.  I run to the window to see if I can see the giants.  Instead I see a face.

I let out a bloodcurdling scream as I fall backwards.  My father jumps up and runs out the door.  I run and sit on my mothers lap as she starts to braid my hair back.  She tells me everything is okay.

My father walks back through the door.  Behind him a little head pops around the frame.  He looks at us with big blue eyes, framed with dark lashes.  His dark hair is a tousled mess, and he has an unsure expression on his face.  My father waves him over as he gets some of our bread out.  My mother has her eyes on my father the whole time, while I watch the little boy.  Slowly, he makes his way to the table.

'This is Holden.' my father says simply.
'Hello Holden.' my mother says.
'Hi.' he says shyly.

<< present >>

I think that is the only time I have ever seen Holden shy.  He breezed his way through schooling with his good looks, charm, and wit.  Even though he was a reserved guy who kept to himself most of the time, he was a natural leader.  He had a knack for strategy.

I must have been lost in thought, because all of a sudden I ran smack into Holden.  Again.  I looked up at him.  He was looking down at me with concern in his eyes.  I cocked my head to the side trying to figure out what stopped him.  That's when I heard it.  Voices.
